Americans corral Mavericks on road

INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, defeated the Kansas City Mavericks on Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The win was the Americans third in a row.

Kansas City opened the scoring in the first period when Hunter Smith, put in a rebound for his seventh of the season to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Kansas City would outshoot Allen by twelve at 16-4 after twenty minutes of play.

Allen would tie the score early in the second frame when Peter MacArthur followed up his own rebound for his fifth goal of the year, from Spencer Asuchak and Mathieu Aubin. The period ended tied with Kansas City holding a 29-15 advantage in shots on goal after two periods.

The Americans would break that tie in the final frame when Alex Schoenborn knocked one home out of the air in front of the Mavericks net for his third of the season. Mathieu Aubin and Mike Gunn picked up the assists on the Schoenborn goal. Allen would add another when Schoenborn and Aubin hooked up again with a cross-ice pass from the left circle to the right with Aubin beating Mason McDonald for his third point of the night. Allen would give up a goal late but hold on for the victory.

Jeremy Brodeur was outstanding in net stopping 39 of 41 shots on goal for his fourth straight win. Brodeur got the emergency start when Stephon Williams was hurt in warmups. Kevin St Pierre filled in as the Americans emergency backup goaltender.

Kansas City outshot Allen for the game 41 to 23. The Americans didn’t receive a power play in the game while KC was 0-for-2.

The same two clubs meet Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Independence. The Americans return home to Allen Event Center on December 19th and 20th against Kansas City.
