Patrik Allvin signed a three-year contract Wednesday to remain general manager of the Vancouver Canucks.
“I want to thank the Aquilini family [owners] and [president of hockey operations] Jim Rutherford for providing me this incredible opportunity,” Allvin said. “The privilege of staying on to continue what we started here with the Canucks means so very much to me and my family. While our group has taken many positive steps forward, the job is not done. We will continue to push and put in the work necessary to build a championship caliber team.”
Allvin was hired as the first Sweden-born GM of an NHL team on Jan. 26, 2022 and is in his third season. After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs the previous two seasons, the Canucks lead the Pacific Division and have the best record in the Western Conference (33-11-5).
Vancouver will have an NHL-high five players playing in the 2024 Honda (U.S.)/Rogers (Canada) NHL All-Star Game (3 p.m. ET; ABC, ESPN+, SN, CBC, TVAS) on Saturday: forwards Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, defenseman Quinn Hughes and goalie Thatcher Demko. Coach Rick Tocchet also will coach one of the teams.
“Patrik has done a terrific job in helping us rebuild our hockey team both on and off the ice,” Rutherford said. “He has worked tirelessly to create a new culture and identity that embodies the important attributes of hard work, structure and dedication. With an ever present win-the-day mentality, Patrik’s leadership skills will be a key driver for our organization moving forward.”
During Allvin’s tenure the Canucks signed Miller (seven years) and Boeser (three years) to long-term contracts and acquired top-pair defenseman Filip Hronek in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. During the offseason Vancouver balanced the roster by signing forwards Teddy Blueger and Pius Suter, and defensemen Ian Cole and Carson Soucy.
The Canucks also hired Tocchet as coach Jan. 22, 2023. Since Tocchet’s arrival, the Canucks are 53-23-9.
Allvin’s contract follows Rutherford signing a three-year contract Jan. 19 to remain in his role.
