Allan Cup run begins in earnest

DUNDAS—The Dundas Real McCoys have their work cut out for them after dropping two Allan Cup Hockey games this past weekend.

The McCoys have three games to go in the regular season schedule.  Friday night (February 7th), they will be in Hamilton for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff with the Hamilton Steelhawks in the Dave Andreychuk Arena.

Saturday, will take on the Whitby Dunlops at 6:30 p.m. in the Iroquois Arena before completing their season at home in the JL Grightmire Arena at 7:30 p.m. against the Brantford Blast.

“Friday night we didn’t do what we had been doing, which was out-working the other team. The Steelhawks really came to play and our streak ended as they all do, and full marks to Hamilton,” said Don Robertson, McCoys President and General Manager.

“We still like our group and have added Chase Trull as well as Jon Gleed, who will add depth to our club as we prepare for the playoffs.  We still have some business to attend to though in the next couple weeks.”

“Super Bowl Sunday we played at 7:30 (they changed the start time from 2 p.m.) in Brantford, and only had 10 skaters, which isn’t the way to play the Blast. We did lead twice, and turned in a gutsy effort to gain a valuable point in the standings. You have to give full marks to the group of guys that came, Robertson added.

After falling 7-3 to the Hamilton Steelhawks at home, the McCoys rebound with an end-to-end battle with the Blast in the Brantford Civic Centre only to be edged 5-4 in overtime when Rob Hisey scored the winner at 3:23.  Ryan Watson forced overtime when he scored for the McCoys at 19:59 of the third period.

The previous night in Dundas, the McCoys came up with a strong effort, but the Steelhawks continued their mastery over them, winning five of the six games they have played against their hosts.

Shall we dance!?  Ryan Watson keeps his eye on the puck while goalkeeper Adam Munro blocks its progress to the net.  Phil Brewer (19) holds off Hamilton’s Bryan Mcgregor (71).

Friday night was Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, and appropriately, Darren Haydar, who suffers from the disease, scored the McCoys final goal of the game.  A portion of every ticket that was sold that night was donated to the Society.

Josh Ranalli paced the Steelhawks with three goals, while Brandon Maclean added a goal and three assists.  Josh Soares, Bryan Mcgregor, and Bryan Cameron scored once each.  Paul Zanette set up three of the Hamilton goals with David Ling, and Chris Leveille assisting on two goals each.  For Dundas, Trevor Atkinson, Shawn Snider, and Haydar scored once each.  Kevin Harvey set up two of the Dundas scoring plays.

Saturday night at Brantford, Ryan scored twice including the goal that forced overtime, while Mackenzie Wood and Shawn Snider added a goal and an assist each.  Connor Russell and Phil Brewer set up two scoring plays apiece.

Brantford replied with a three-point night from Hisey including the game-winner.  Nik Bibic and Sean Blanchard had a goal and an assist each.  Jordan Owens and Andrew Radjenovic rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
