Aho saves Carolina in OT win over Vegas

In Raleigh, the Vegas Golden Knights scored twice in the third period to erase a 1-3 deficit and force extra time with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canes rebounded when Sebastien Aho scored in the extra session for a 4-3 win.

Brett Howden and Nicolas Hague rallied the Knights for the loser’s point.

“Obviously, they got a couple late ones, but I like how we got right back on in overtime,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It was a good game. It was certainly an exciting overtime.”

Frederik Andersen made 26 saves in the Canes win.

“We know he has to be one of our best players if we are going to be successful, and he has been all year,” Brind’Amour said.

Carolina improved to 28-9-2.

Nino Niederreiter and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Hurricanes in regulation.

“Whenever we play together, we know exactly what we have to do to be successful,” Niederreiter said. “It’s just trusting in one another. I think that’s very key for us.”

Nolan Patrick also scored for the Golden Knights.

“Playing a very good team on the other side that is almost at full health and rested, this was a tough game on the schedule for us,” Vegas head coach Pete DeBoer said. “Over a long season, it’s important you find a way to get points in games like this. Maybe you don’t deserve a point, but we hung around, our goalie was really good. We were opportunistic and got an important point.”

Vegas fell to 25-15-3.

“Any goal kind of gives you a bit of confidence,” Patrick said. “I just try to keep building, try to get better each game and try to contribute as much as I can.”

Laurent Brossoit made 26 saves in the Vegas loss.
