NORFOLK, VA – Alexis Loiseau, who had scored twice in regulation, and Steven Whitney scored shootout goals as the host Norfolk Admirals (2-4-0) survived for a 3-2 shootout win after the Quad City Mallards (3-2-2) rallied with goals late in regulation from Olivier Archambault and Guillaume Gelinas but had to settle for one point Friday night.
Admirals goaltender Ty Rimmer stopped the Mallards’ Raphael Bussieres in the final round of the shootout to clinch victory for Norfolk.
Late in the third period, it seemed the Admirals would have no need of the shootout to secure two points but Archambault kick-started the Mallard comeback by tipping in a power play goal at 14:59 of the third. With just a minute left in regulation, Gelinas – who had assisted on Archambault’s strike – fired home an Archambault centering pass home to even the score. The five minute overtime that followed brought ample chances at both ends but did not produce a winning goal.

The Mallards spent most of the night battling from behind. The Admirals first took the lead when Loiseau converted Greg Chase’s centering pass at 12:44 of the first period. Loiseau struck again from the right wing circle at 6:28 of the second period.
The Mallards return to action on the road against the Wheeling Nailers tomorrow night.
