Milwaukee, WI–The Admirals found themselves in a first period hole and couldn’t dig out of it as they dropped a 4-2 decision to Grand Rapids on Wednesday night at Panther Arena.
The loss snapped a five-game point streak for the Admirals as the began the 2018
portion by finishing off a home-and-home set against the Griffins that began last year.
For the second straight game the Griffins got off to an early lead over the Ads as they scored twice in a 68 second span in the middle of the first period. The first came from Axel Holmstrom at the 9:30 mark and was followed by a tally from Matt Puempel just over a minute later.
Bobby Butler halved the Griffins lead early in the middle frame, scoring his 13th goal of the year at the 2:32 mark. With the Ads on the power-play Harry Zolnierczyk fed Butler, who ripped a one-timer that bounced off the leg pad of Griffins goalie Jared Coreau, over his leg, and into the net.
A Corey Elkins wrap-around goal at the 7:22 mark of the third period put Grand Rapids up 3-1, but Milwaukee countered just 39 seconds on a slapshot from Zolnierczyk from the left circle to pull the Ads back within one.
However the Griffins sealed it on a goal from Matt Lorito with exactly six minutes to play in the third period.
