Winnipeg, MB–Adam Helewka scored twice and added an assist to help lead the Admirals to a wild 6-5 win over the Manitoba Moose on Sunday afternoon.
The Ads also picked up goals from Duncan Siemens, Joe Pendenza, Eeli Tolvanen and Matt Donovan to help snap a six-game losing streak and kick off their season-long seven game roadtrip on the right foot.
Milwaukee built an early two-goal lead of tallies from Siemens and Helewka, but Manitoba scored twice in the first 2:47 of the second period to level the score.
However, Milwaukee responded with three of the own, courtesy of Pendenza, Tolvanen and Helewka’s second to build a 5-2 lead after two periods and it looked like the Ads would cruise to an easy win.
The Moose had other thoughts and pulled within two on a JC Lipon shorthanded goal at 7:06 of the third. Then Alexis D’Aoust made it 5-4 with a shot from the point that made it passed a screened Troy Grosenick with 6:45 to play.
The Moose pulled their goal with two minutes left in the third and Matt Donovan took advantage, sending a backhand 175′ into the empty cage for a 6-4 lead.
Manitoba responded once again as Lipon got his second of the game just nine seconds later to make it 6-5, but that was as close as they could come as the Admirals escaped with the victory.
Grosenick earned the win in net for the Ads, making 27 saves for his 14th win of the season.
