Admirals hold off Penguins for 2-1 win Dea tallies team-leading sixth power play goal for W-B/Scranton

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Max Friberg’s goal 5:44 into third period stood as the game-winner as the Norfolk Admirals edged the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 2-1, on Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The game was tied at one heading into the third period before Admirals forward Chris Wagner was able to force a turnover in the offensive zone.  Friberg picked up the loose puck and stickhandled toward the crease before tucking a shot past the outstretched leg pad of Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff.Norfolk Admirals logo

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would have the opportunity to knot the score late in regulation.  With Norfolk netminder Jason LaBarbera down on the ice, a bouncing puck found its way to Jayson Megna at the bottom of the left circle, but his shot rang off the post to allow the Admirals to maintain their lead and skate away with the win.

Norfolk jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:17 of the first when Zatkoff stopped a shot from the blueline by Brendan Bell, but Charles Sauralt was left alone to collect the rebound and fire it into the open net.

With less than four minutes remaining in the second period, the Penguins were able to pull even on their third power play of the game.  Carter Rowney’s slapshot from inside the blueline deflected off of Sahir Gill, who setting the screen in front, and settled near the far post, where Jean-Sebastien Dea was in position to knock in his ninth goal of the season.

Zatkoff took the loss and fell to 11-7-2 on the season, saving 21-of-23 shots from the Admirals.  LaBarbera turned away 23 of the 24 shots he faced to raise his record to 4-4-1.
