Adam Smith heads back to Wheeling for another season

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers, ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, announced the team has re-signed defenseman Adam Smith to a contract for the 2021-22 season.Smith, 24, is set to begin his second season with the Nailers and third full year as a pro. After joining the Naillers in February last season, he posted an even plus/minus rating, while appearing in 55 of the team’s final 56 games while posting 12 points (2 goals-10 assists). In his career, Smith has played 100 ECHL games with Wheeling, Atlanta and Florida, collecting 20 points (4 goals-16 assists). He also suited up twice for the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals in 2019-20.

Prior to turning pro, the Sharon, Ontario native attended Bowling Green State University, where he finished even or better in plus/minus during three of four years, while notching 18 points (6 goals-12 assists). Following his freshman year, he was selected by the Nashville Predators in the seventh round (198th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Smith was named to the WCHA All-Academic Team during his junior and senior seasons.
