Aces outshoot Rush, but Rapid City earns 3-2 win

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska badly outshot Rapid City, but it was the visiting Rush that corralled the 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Arena.

Rapid City managed 8 shots in the first period, 6 in the second and just 2 in the third, while the Aces fired off 11 in the first, 13 in the second and 18 in the third.

After a scoreless first period, Michael Young gave RC a 1-0 lead at 13:02 of the second with his 4th goal of the season on the power play. Alaska tied it up on Justin Breton’s rebound follow-up of a William Wrenn slot shot. Breton broke his stick on the play, but drove the net hard and had enough muscle to get the puck past Rush goaltender Danny Battochio.

Daniel Barczuk scored a tap-in at 18:30 to send the Rush into the locker room with a 2-1 lead after two.

In the third, the eventual game-winner for RC came on the power play as James Melindy popped in his second tally of the season at 2:15. The Rush withstood Alaska’s 18 shot barrage until Garet Hunt tipped Collin Valcourt’s shot into the net at 19:45.

Battochio was outstanding for Rapid City, turning away 40 shots for the win. Aces goalie Troy Redmann made 13 saves.

The Aces are now off until December 31 when they entertain the Utah Grizzlies at the Sullivan Arena.
