ANCHORAGE, Alaska – After battling to a 2-2 tie after overtime, the Indy Fuel outscored the Alaska Aces 3-2 in the shootout Friday night in front of a large Military Appreciation Night crowd at the
Sullivan Arena.
No scoring in the first period, but plenty of action as the two teams combined for 8 fighting major penalties.
In the second period, Alaska’s Tyler Ruegsegger scored his first goal of the season in his second go-round with the Aces with a snap shot from the left circle that beat Fuel goaltender Jake Hildebrand. Ruegsegger settled a bouncing puck and got the tally unassisted at 2:36.
Indy tied the game at 1 with Anthony Beauregard’s 2nd goal of the season. Beauregard tipped home a shot from the blueline by defenseman Chris Williams, a former UAA player.
Alaska reclaimed the lead at 17:22 of the second period on a power play goal by Tim Wallace. He accepted a cross-ice pass from Daniel Moynihan and blasted a shot that zipped up and over Hildebrand’s shoulder and under the crossbar for his 2nd goal of the season. Moynihan and Tommy Olczyk got assists.
In the third period, Indy’s Matt Stanisz found the back of the net with a shot from the blueline that went through a screen and past Aces goaltender Kevin Carr and the game was tied at 2 heading into overtime.
Alaska enjoyed a man-advantage in the OT but could not generate scoring opportunities. Indy outshot Alaska 2-1 in the OT period.
On to the shootout where Indy got goals from Alex Wideman, Kevin Lynch and Beauregard to offset Aces goals by Peter Sivak and Stephen Perfetto.
Hildebrand made 27 saves for the win, while Carr stopped 29 shots.
The Aces and Fuel will complete their three-game series Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena. The Aces took game one Wednesday 5-1.
