The Abbotsford Canucks training camp got underway yesterday at the Abbotsford Centre.
The initial list of players attending camp had 14 players assigned to Abbotsford. The first eight forwards at camp include: Vincent Arseneau, Jarid Lukosevicius, Ethan Keppen, Tristan Nielsen, Chase Wouters, Karel Plasek, John Stevens and Sheldon Rempal. On defence they will have Ashton Sautner, Alex Kannok-Leipert, Devante Stephens and the highly touted defenceman Jett Woo. In goal, the Abbotsford squad will start with Spencer Martin and Artūrs Šilovs, with Michael DiPietro surely join the group at later date.
Yesterday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that forward Jonah Gadjovich was on waivers with the purpose of getting him to Abbotsford. However, the San Jose Sharks have claimed Gadjovich, who is going into his fourth pro season after being drafted 55th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Gadjovich had 15 goals in 19 games last season in the AHL, and will surely get a every opportunity to succeed in San Jose. This is a big loss to the Abbotsford Canucks roster.
Also announced by the parent club in Vancouver was that Vancouver’s 2nd round pick from the 2021 NHL Entry draft, Danila Klimovich, has been loaned to the Abbotsford Canucks. He has been dealing with a groin injury after playing well in two preseason games with Vancouver. Klimovich will get a chance to gain some confidence and professional hockey experience in Abbotsford.
Training camp runs from Oct. 6-9 with Trent Cull at the helm putting the players through the paces and instilling the systems that Abbotsford wants to play. Abbotsford opens the 2021-22 AHL season on Oct. 16 against the Bakersfield Condors, and their home opener will be Oct. 22 as they take on the Henderson Silver Knights at the Abbotsford Centre.
