It was an explosive four goal first period for the Owen Sound Attack, as they jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back, claiming a 5-2 win over the rival Guelph Storm Saturday night at the Bayshore.
It wasn’t the most ideal start for Owen Sound, surrendering the opening goal just 1:40 into the game. After Thursday night’s outing had them claw back from a 5-1 deficit, going down while the ice was still fresh was early adversity for the Attack. It was the veteran players on Owen Sound though that once again led the way, as the line of Sam Sedley, Deni Goure, and former Storm Matthew Papais began tilting the ice in the home teams favour.
It’s been quite weekend for Goure and Papais so far, each recording back-to-back multi-point games. Goure led the way Saturday night, netting a pair of goals while adding two assists, giving him seven points over the two game stretch. Papais for his efforts has a pair of games recording a goal and two assists. It was the two veteran players who vaulted the Attack back in front, as they netted their goals just three minutes apart.
It wasn’t long after taking the lead that the Attack built on that lead, as defensemen Teddy Sawyer would get his first goal as a Bear coming in from the blue line to squeak a loose puck through Storm goalie Jacob Oster. Owen Sound would stretch their lead to 4-1 late in the period, when Thomas Chafe ripped home his second of the year from the slot.
It was a fairly uneventful middle period, as the Attack were happy to play a more controlled game, not allowing the Storm any high quality opportunities on net. Guelph was granted a few power play opportunities, but some stellar penalty killing and shot blocking kept the Storm from cutting into the lead.
Owen Sound stretched the score to 5-1 early in period three, when Goure sniped his second of the game beating Oster short-side top shelf. The goal came off a nice stretch feed to Papais from netidner Corbin Votary who would pick-up his first OHL point. The Storm were able to cut into the lead late in the game, while each team had a glorious chance turned aside by solid goaltending in the final minutes of play.
After a rough outing Thursday night, where he surrendered five goals, Votary was mentally tested early giving up the first goal just over a minute into the action. The second year net minder rebounded nicely though, stoning the Storm and providing confidence for his team.
