The Kingston Frontenacs (12-10-1-1) lost a tough 5-3 battle to the Mississauga Steelheads (12-7-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Paramount Fine Foods Centre. OHL goal-leader Francesco Arcuri scored twice for the fourth-straight game, Quinton Burns scored his first of the season, and Matthew Soto had a pair of assists. Arcuri, playing in his 150th regular-season game, has points in five straight (9G,3A) with his 11th career multi-goal game. Luke Misa, Chas Sharpe, Isaac Enright found the back of the net, and James Hardie tallied a pair including an empty netter for Mississauga.
Rookie goalie Mason Vaccari was solid in making 42 saves on 46 shots in his 10th game. Fellow freshman Ryerson Leenders took the Steelhead crease seeing 31 Kingston shots with 28 saves, earning the third-star of the contest.
The first of two Frontenacs powerplay goals came on the opening goal. An early opportunity with Zander Veccia ejected for a five-minute boarding penalty saw OHL goal-leader Francesco Arcuri (21) making them pay with a blistering one-timer off an excellent feed from Matthew Soto. The 1-0 goal at 3:40 came on the Fronts’ first shot of the game, held through the opening frame with the clubs knotted at 10 shots a piece, and gave Arcuri a league-leading 9th goal on the man-advantage on one of eight shots on goal for the Dallas Stars prospect.
The Black and Gold scored twice in the middle frame to hold onto the one-goal lead they had after twenty minutes, with the Steelheads responding with a pair of their own in the second. Luke Misa (2) got the home side on the board with their first at 5:07 of the frame for the 1-1 score, with the seesaw battle continuing with Kingston scoring again just over three minutes later.
A breakaway chance for Arcuri (22) led to his second of the game beating the Steelhead goalie on a low blocker shot for the 2-1 lead at 8:31. Soto had made a nice pass to spring the Fronts points-leader for Kingston’s second lead of the game, earning the assist for his second consecutive multi-point effort.
Mississauga’s Chas Sharpe (3) tied the game for a second time, with Kingston killing a penalty with just under five minutes left in the second period. The 2-2 strike saw first-star Beck get a second point of the game with an assist at 15:06.
Kingston took its third lead with a second powerplay goal that saw Quinton Burns make it 3-2 at 17:45. Ben Roger assisted on the play, trading passes with Burns before the shot from the point beating Leenders giving Kingston an opportunity to improve on a 7-1-1-0 record when leading after two periods. Owen Outwater also assisted in extending a point streak to three games (2G,3A).
Mississauga improved to 2-6-1-0, trailing after forty minutes with a three-goal third period coming out with some aggression firing 11 shots on Vaccari before tying it up midway through the final period. James Hardie (11) made it 3-3 at 9:18 before Isaac Enright (1) gave the Steelheads their first lead of the game at 13:25. Hardie (12) added an empty-net goal to seal the 5-3 final at 19:19.
Kingston returns to Leon’s Centre for Teddy bear Toss night on Friday, December 2nd at 7:00 pm.
