67’s thrash IceDogs in highlight-filled affair

In a game that featured a lacrosse goal, and a first OHL goal, the Ottawa 67’s won by a final score of 7-2, inside The Arena at TD Place.

Ottawa had goals from six different scorers, Saturday afternoon, in their convincing win over the Niagara IceDogs. Cooper Foster scored a pair, along with others from Brad Gardiner, and Anthony Costantini, before Brady Stonehouse pulled off the Michigan move, Caden Kelly potted the first of his career, and Luca Pinelli iced things with his ninth of the year.

Max Donoso made 23 saves in goal, for his league-leading 10th win of the campaign. The Barber Poles dominated the shots on goal category as well, peppering Josh Rosenzweig with 57 shots.

The 67’s now move to 15-1-0 on the season, with their sixth straight victory.

Gardiner got the action started, picking Rosenzweig’s pocket, and putting home his 10th of the year to open the scoring. Just over six minutes later, Costantini walked down from the point, and ripped home his second goal in as many games, for a 2-0 67’s lead.

The IceDogs did get one back before the end of the period, courtesy of Declan Waddick, but the Barber Poles responded less than a minute later. Vinzenz Rohrer stole the puck in the neutral zone, and powered his way into the Niagara zone. The Montreal Canadiens prospect sauced the puck cross-ice to Foster, who capitalized for his first of two on the day, and a 3-1 lead.

There was only one goal in the middle period, but it again belonged to Foster. A point shot from Thomas Sirman, and follow-up chance by Rohrer created a juicy rebound, and the Soo native made no mistake, achieving his first career multi-goal game.

Heading to the third up 4-1, and outshooting Niagara 37-16, things would only improve for the 67’s. Just 1:30 in, Stonehouse pulled off his highlight reel lacrosse move to make it 5-1. Gerard Keane answered back for the IceDogs, but Kelly’s first OHL goal on a backhand shot restored the four-goal advantage, with Ethan Quick notching his first career point on the assist.

On a powerplay shortly past the midway point of the frame, Pinelli blasted home a one-timer to add insult to injury, and secure a 7-2 win for the Barber Poles.

Up next for the 67’s is their School Day Game on Tuesday, hosting the Kingston Frontenacs at 10:30am, at Canadian Tire Centre.
