The Oshawa Generals came into The Arena at TD Place a depleted group, and the Ottawa 67’s took full advantage.
A five-goal second period propelled the Barber Poles to a 5-1 victory, thanks to goals from Vinzenz Rohrer, Brady Stonehouse, Logan Morrison, Luca Pinelli, and Pavel Mintyukov. Max Donoso wasn’t tested, but made 11 saves for his 25th win of the season.
“It’s just one of those quirky games you get into schedule,” said Head Coach Dave Cameron. “Where a team shows up, and they’re fighting the flu, missing a couple of key guys. We were a little choppy in the first period, but were real good in the second, so aside from a couple things, it was a solid effort.”
Despite the lopsided nature of the game, it was the Generals striking first, on a powerplay goal from Stuart Rolofs, and they carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.
The 67’s offensive onslaught began in the middle frame’s opening moments, with Rohrer banging home a rebound for a powerplay goal of his own, knotting the score at 1-1.
Stonehouse got in on the fun a few minutes later, moments after a Will Gerrior goal was waved off. Jack Dever dumped the puck in from centre ice, and with Generals netminder Carter Bickle out of the net to play it, the puck took a wild bounce off the end boards, and bounced to Stonehouse in front of the wide open cage.
At the 8:28 mark of the period, Morrison rifled home a wrister for his 33rd of the season, before Pinelli banged in a rebound just under eight minutes later, for a 4-1 lead.
Just over a minute later, a mad scramble ensued in front of the Oshawa goal, and Mintyukov made no mistake on a chance of his own, completing the five-goal second period for Ottawa.
To make matters worse for the Generals, the 67’s were outshooting the illness-depleted road squad 30-5 after 40 minutes.
Rolofs added another with less than two seconds to play, but it was small comfort for the Generals, as the 67’s cruised to victory.
Ottawa gets right back to it on Monday, with a 2:00pm Family Day home game against the North Bay Battalion.
