CHICAGO, Ill. – The Manitoba Moose and the Hamilton Bulldogs placed one for the record books. It took just under four hours to finish this game as center Dustin Boyd scored six seconds into the third overtime for his first goal in the playoffs. The win by the score of 2-1, will send the Hamilton Bulldogs to the Western Conference Finals where they will face either the Houston Aeros or the Milwaukee Admirals who play their Game 7 on Tuesday night.
The Manitoba Moose scored first with their only goal of the game in the first period as right wing Sergei Shirokov scored his seventh of the playoffs with assists from Jason Jaffray and Marco Rosa.
Hamilton’s Nigel Dawes, with his ninth of the playoffs, fired a shot in towards Eddie Lack who was ready to stop the puck but it deflected off a defenders stick and in. The score in the third knotted the game at one goal apiece at and that is where it ended in regulation, and then after the first overtime, and then after the second.
Lack was named the number one star of the game facing 57 shots in the game while stopping 55. Drew MacIntyre, who got the win for Hamilton, stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced.
With a few seconds over 100 minutes and five compete periods played in this game, it marks the first time in AHL history that a Game 7 has gone this long. It is amazing since seventeen other games that went into overtime never went beyond the fourth period.
