Annapolis, MD: The United States Naval Academy came up short in the Veteran’s Day Matinee versus the William Paterson University Pioneers, by a final score of 6-4. Both teams were coming off of wins the night before, with Navy defeating Villanova at home, while WPU topped Towson University on the road.
Tyler Steimel of the Pioneers scored quickly at just 1:24 in the first with an assist from Hunter Ledwith. At 5:04 Thomas Bauer of WPU was set up by Walter Keiper and again by Ledwith. Navy got on the board at 9:22 when Derek Golembrosky scored with help from Nathan Hyden and John Scaccia. At 17:16 the Pioneers went back up by two goals when Braden Ploehn and Louie Kuka set up a goal by Shawn Lacorte.
WPU extended their lead at 13:58 of the second period on a power play goal scored by Scott Huber, while Ledwith got another assist, along with Eamon Mcmillion also picking up an assist. At 15:04, while on the power play, Navy’s Matthew Stamler cut into the lead with another assist from Nathan Hyden and an assist from Michael Burkard. The Midshipmen closed out the scoring in the second period when Conner Hyden scored with another assist from Burkard at 19:02 while on the power play.
Navy’s Nathan Hyden tied the game at 4:01 of the third with assists from Luke Turk and Ross Hogan. At 9:46 it was WPU’s Eamon Mcmillion scoring what turned out to be the game winner with Ledwith picking up his fourth assist and Scott Huber picking up is second point of the game. The goal was scored on the power play. Alex Cavaluzzo scored on an empty net goal for the Pioneers with 18 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Navy’s Thatcher Givens was in goal for 46 of the 47 shots on goal and made 41 saves. WPU’s Jeremy Hamerquist made 44 saves on 48 shots.
The Pioneers are off until a home game on Friday, November 30 agains New York University. Navy continues their six game homestand on Friday, November 16th when Drexel comes to Annapolis.
