Windsor earns a spot in the Memorial Cup

READING, PA – For all of the time and attention put towards next months NHL Entry Draft in Montreal where John Tavares is being slated as the player who will go first overall to the New York Islanders. Next years draft may be out of the public’s consciousness, but scouts and GM’S around the NHL are keeping one eye towards next years draft thanks to the ever growing legend of Taylor Hall.

Hall scored his 16th goal of the playoffs at 2:09 of overtime on the power play to help the Windsor Spitfires defeat the Brampton Battalion in Game 5 of the OHL Championship series, 2-1. With the win, the Spitfires not only won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions, but they have also earned a spot in the Memorial Cup tournament to be held in Rimouski, Quebec and will start play in the tournament Saturday May 16th against the QMJHL champion. Drummondville leads their series over Shawinigan 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Dale Mitchell got the Spitfires on the board, also on the powr play, for a 1-0 lead at the 13:06 mark of the second period. Brampton’s Matt Kang tied the game with 3:46 left in the period. Hall than turned it on in overtime. Brampton’s Matt Duchene went to the penalty box for hitting from behind at at 1:32. Hall than scored 37 seconds later to set off the celebration. Hall, who had 16 goals and 20 assists in 20 games, led all playoff scorers and was awarded the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the OHL Playoff MVP. The WHL is also awaiting to crown a champion. The Kelowna Rockets are one win away from joining Windsor and the host team in the tournament, the Rimouski Oceanic, in the Memorial Cup, but they have lost the last two games in their series with the Calgary Hitmen for a 3-2 series lead.
