QUEBEC CITY P.Q.—Three goals in 3:38 seconds in the second periods led Victoriaville to a convincing 6-1 wins over the Quebec Remparts in game three of their quarter-final series.
Philip-Michael Devos, with three goals, Philip Maillet with two, the other belonging to Joel Champagne led the Victoriaville offensive. Three of Tigres’ six goals were scored with a man advantage.
After the second game in Quebec, Remparts head coach Patrick Roy was the first to recognize the urgency for his team to win first game in this series.
“The Tigres won first two games in our building; we will have to find way to win our first game in their building. We played good hockey on the road; we can’t go in Victoriaville trailing 0-3 after game three,” said Roy.
Quebec began game three playing aggressive hockey, trying to shake Tigres’ confidence. The line of Frederick Roy with Ryan Bourque and Danick Paquette, who played his first game in the series, got the first two great scoring chances in the game forcing Victoriaville goaltender Keven Poulin to make two key saves on Quebec’s first four shots. Roy, left alone on Poulin right side, missed the best scoring chance of the first two.
Poulin was again very solid during a penalty to his teammate Joel Champagne preventing the visitors from opening the scoring. Quebec dominated the shots on goal in first seven minutes 7-2 and Victoriaville’s first shot on net was from the defensive zone during Tigres first shorthanded situation.
Quebec ended the first period trailing 1-0 on a goal scored by Champagne during a penalty to Roy at 7:44. Remparts’ head coach was furious after referee Dominic Bedard allowed Victoriaville’s first goal in the game thinking the puck was hit over the Tigres centerman’s shoulder. After the video review, the referee’s decision confimred the goal and the Tigres led 1-0 after the first twenty minutes. Quebec dominated the shots on goal 14-8 with six dangerous shots compared to only three on Victoriaville 8 shots on Louis Domingue.
If Poulin played a great first period making several key saves, Domingue did the same in the second period stopping Trevor McIsaac, Andrej Nestrasil and Guillaume Goulet. Three goals scored in 3:38 minutes by Victoriaville gave a commanding 4-0 lead after two periods.
Great forchecking by Victoriaville led them to their first two goals in the period. Pressured in offensive zone by Gourde and Goulet gave Philippe Maillet the chance to beat Quebec goaltender sliding the puck on Domingue’s left side for Tigres second goal in the game.
Philip-Michael Devos scored first of his two goals in the second period this one with a man advantage beating Remparts goaltender between the pads for the third Victoriaville goal.
Devos scored the fourth Tigres goals completing the great offensive forchecking by Tomas Kubalik and Doyle.
Devos completed his hat trick 2:03 into the third period for Tigres’s fifth goal in the game. Maillet left alone on Domingue left side beat Quebec goaltender, scoring his second of the game 4:22 in third period scoring the last Victoriaville goal in the game at 9:45.
Mikael Tam was the only one to beat Victoriaville netminder taking his own rebound for Quebec only goal in the game avoiding his team to be shutout.
Quebec will face elimination Wednesday night in game number four.
