TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Devils released a statement today officially suspending operations of their ECHL affiliate in Trenton. Slumping ticket sales and a less than competitive product on the ice made for a difficult situation all the way around.
The NHL Devils had owned the ECHL club outright and had made an effort to brand the “Devils” logo throughout their system.
Indeed, when the franchise was the Titans they were highly ranked in ECHL attendance, as high as fourth. But for the 2010-11 season they were last in the 20-team circuit.
The NHL Devils’ statement suggested the organization was looking to restructure how it operates its minor league system.
“ The New Jersey Devils are restructuring the organization’s player development system to be more in line with other NHL franchises.”
Mounting costs at every turn may force the club to sell its ownership stake in Treton and relocate the franchise elsewhere. But who has the money?
