Tough weekend for Phoenix

MANCHESTER, UK – MANCHESTER Phoenix continue their pursuit of top spot in the English Premier League with tough matches against Milton Keynes Lightning and Swindon Wildcats this weekend. Both sides have already caused Tony Hand’s men problems this season and are scrambling for points. Milton Keynes (Saturday, 7pm) recorded a 8-2 win in late September before being edged out on penalty shots last month. Swindon (Sunday, 5pm) have gone close in the team’s two games this year – the first a penalty shot decision that went Phoenix’ way and a 5-4 defeat in Manchester. “It is another tough weekend for us, but we have had a good week of training and are focussed on good results,” Hand said. “It is always difficult in Milton Keynes but we are a match for any team. Swindon are a free scoring side and we will have to be on our guard on Sunday if we are to continue our great run of home results.” The Wildcats have recruited well this season and with the amount of talent in their roster seventh-place is far from what they expect. Forwards Aaron Nell (16 goals) and Jonas Hoog (15) are providing the firepower but they are leaking goals. 71 have been conceded in 19 matches and so the signing of Czech blueliner Tomas Fojtik from Telford can only help. Phoenix will welcome back Hand into the line up after he returned from coaching GB in Japan. To contact the author email: Mike.Appleton@prohockeynews.com
