FRISCO, TEXAS–Coming off a 4-2 victory last night against the same team, the Texas Tornado came out fast in their back-to-back series with the New Mexico Mustangs as they were dominating throughout the entire game. The Tornado were clearly more prepared for the engagement with the Mustangs and seemed like the Mustangs could not get their game together from the beginning. The Tornado were stronger and faster at getting to looser pucks and shooting the puck more.
The Tornado took a 2-0 lead with two goals by Drew Allen, who was flying throughout the game with his linemates Drew Mayer who finished the game with 3 assists and Mitchell McPherson, who finished the game with an assist in the game.
The Tornado and Mustangs both have 4 games remaining in their season.
“Well, we feel good, felt like we were getting momentum at the right time. Part of that has been gotten healthy since September. It’s a good time to have the momentum now,” Tony Curtale said after the game.
Fredick Leisner finished with 22 saves for the Tornado (33-16-7), who extended their winning streak to four games. Adam Chapie spoiled Leisner’s shutout with a goal, his 30th goal of the season in the 2nd period but the Tornado answered back and extended their lead to 2 goals again as Jackson Leef scored his 5th goal of the season.
In the third period, Avil Bordak scored his 1st goal with the Mustangs as the game was 3-2 before the Tornado scored two unanswered goals by Drew Allen, who had a hattrick and Taylor Herndon answered back as the score was 5-2.
The Mustangs had a hard time containing the Tornado third line as both Mayer and Allen were lighting it up for the Tornado. Allen had his three goals and Mayer assisted on the Allen goals.
Allen was named 1st star of the game.
“That whole line with Drew Allen, Drew Mayer and Mitchell McPherson played great for us. We put them together thinking they might be an energy line plus they can also score and we didn’t anticipating quite as going as well. We are going to keep that line together and a big reason why we won tonight.”
The Texas Tornado will try to extend their win streak as they face the Corpus Christi Ice Rays. They will be away for the first two meetings before meeting back at home for the last two games of the season on the 30th and 31st.
