STOCKTON, Calif. – In the only preseason home game for the Stockton Thunder against the Bakersfield Condors, the Thunder came out on top in overtime, with a final score of 4-3.
Both teams looked good in the opening period, with skaters working hard in both zones. Condors Paul Karpowich let a dribbling puck sneak under his outstretched leg at just under 10 minutes into the period. Austin Mayer was credited with the goal, assisted by Michel Spacek and Matt Bergland.
The Condors evened the score within the first two minutes of the second period, after a blocked shot from Jordan Knackstedt was sent back into play and Joel Broda found the back of the net. Several minutes later Mike Hellyer slapped a long shot past Brian Foster in the net, to give the Condors the go-ahead goal. Only seconds later, Jake Morley scored making it a 3-1 game.
Before the end of the period, Austin Mayer came through again for the Thunder. The Thunder evened the score, with a goal from the stick of Landon Oslanski forcing the overtime.
With only 1:57 remaining in the sudden-death overtime, Joey Martin caught a rebound and wristed it past Karpowich for the 4-3 Thunder win.
The Thunder led 38-29 in shots on goal.
The Thunder will head to San Francisco Saturday night for another pre-season game against the Bulls at Cow Palace.
