Team WHL takes game five over Team Russia

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — After Team QMJHL lost their two games, Team OHL fired up their offense in sweeping Team Russia 10-7 and 6-3 in games three and four in the CHL Subway Super Series. Then, Team WHL wanted to redeem themselves after losing their two games last year. It was time for Team WHL to show their stuff beginning with game five in Regina.

Two even strength goals, two with a man advantage and another in a shorthanded situation led Team WHL to 5-2 win against Team Russia. With the win, the Canadian Hockey League leads the Subway Super Series 3 games to 2.

Team Russia was the first to get on the scoreboard. Being fed by Damill Apalkov Bogdan, Potekhin’s shot went over Colorado prospect Calvin Pickard right shoulder 11:20 into the opening period.

Maybe being too cute going into the opening period, Team WHL began to play more physical. Characterized as one of the best open ice hitting defenseman Matt Dumba, (eligible for the 2012 NHL entry draft in Pittsburgh) delivered the first hit worth a mention when the Red Deer Rebels hit Russian center Emil Galisimov.

That seemed to wake Team WHL who answered with their first goal of the game.

Trailing the play Josh Nicholl picked up the garbage beating Russian goalie Andrey Makarov (who usually tends the goal for Saskatoon Blades in WHL) low on his blocker side 2:27 later.

Team WHL’s second goal belonged to Portland Winterhawks right winger and Toronto Maple Leaf prospect Ty Rattie with a man advantage at 18:50.

Team Russia tied the game at two when Pavel Nedvedev’s shot went underneath Pickard’s arm at 10:21.

Team WHL came back scoring for the second time in the game with a man advantage. After making the first save on Brad Ross’ shot, Jordan Weal picked up the rebound that went over Marakov’s blocker with 2:30 remaining in second period.

Ending the game with a man advantage, Team WHL scored their fourth goal. Matt Reinheart the Kootenay Ice center got Team WHL the goal 2:05 into the third period.

Team WHL’s last goal belonged to Brad Ross at 14:06 of third period.

Team WHL will wrap up the CHL Subway Super Series Thursday November 17 playing Team Russia for second times in as many days.
