QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. —Coming off two victories in the Subway Super Series against Team QMJHL, Team Russia came into Ottawa confident of getting their third win in that series. But instead, Team OHL surprised their opponent winning 10- 7 in an offensive festival.
Things seemed to look good for the Russian team after they broke the ice, with first goal of the game scored by Pavel Kulikov 4:47 into first period.
But two penalties taken by Nikita Nesterov (7:36 for tripping) and Kulikov (11:31 for interference) turned things around for Team OHL. Tanner Pearson (usually wearing Barrie Colts jersey) needed only 23 seconds with a man-advantage before getting Team OHL on the scoreboard, getting the equalizer 7:59 into the opening period.
Team OHL took the lead with 12:33 gone in the period on the power play during the penalty to Kulikov. Freddie Hamilton with the first of three in the game made it a 2-1 lead for the OHL. Nathan Chiarliti (Sarnia Sting) completed the scoring in the opening period giving Team OHL 3-1.
Team Russia came back in the second with four goals against one for Team OHL. Ivan Telegin cut Tam OHL lead to one goal 1:45 into the middle frame but Hamilton (Freddie) came right back 2:04 later re-establishing Team OHL two goal lead.
Surprised by the opposition Team Russia ramped up its game, scoring the next four goals, three to close out the middle frame and one in the early going of the third period. The OHL was not particularly impressed as they came back with the next six goals before Team Russia put one more marker on the scoreboard.
Team Russian three other goals in second period came from the stick of Alexander Khokhlachev (4:44), Nikita Gusev (14:01), Telegin (Ivan, his second of the game 15:42) with a man advantage.
Freddie Hamilton who was recognized as the star of the game for Team OHL completed his hat trick 2:51 into the third period. Hamilton’s goal was followed by Mark Sheifele (Winnipeg first round pick) 4:13, Ryan Stome with next two first one 5:14, second one on power play at 11:19, Seth Griffth 15:51 and the second of the game by Sheifele 18:22.
Shavaleev with his second of the game was the last Russian player to beat Andrew D’Agostini (victim of last four Russian goals) who came in relief of Mark Visentin (3 goals against).
Victim of first Team OHL 7 goals Sergey Kostenko was pulled after first 38:55 of play giving up 7 goals on 24 shots. Pavel Shuskov ended the game allowing 3 goals on 15 shots.
