SYRACUSE, NY – The Crunch rallied against the Phantoms tonight at the War Memorial, coming back in the third period to win 6-4.
Crunch netminder Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 21 of 25 shots for his 16th win of the season. Adirondack Phantoms netminder Cal Heeter stopped 25 of 31 shots. Crunch converted on two of four power-play opportunities while their penalty kill unit allowed one goal on three man-advantage chances for the Phantoms.
The Phantoms opened the scoring 9:31 into the first with a rebound goal from Nick Cousins. Cullen Eddy shot the puck across the crease and Cousins pushed a rebound past Gudlevskis’s stick-side. Marcel Noebels potted the Phantoms second goal with two minutes left in the opening frame. A pass from Jason Akeson mid blue line found Noebels in the left circle for a wrist shot to Gudlevskis’ high glove-side. Maxim Lamarche was credited with the secondary assist.
The Crunch cut their deficit in half in the second stanza with a Geoff Walker power-play goal at 7:49. Walker deflected a Jonathan Marchessault shot to hit the top shelf. Yanni Gourde picked up his first of two assists on the play.
The Phantom’s third goal of the night came from Akeson’s unassisted goal at 11:54. Akeson picked off a Crunch pass and landed a shot above Gudlevskis’ right pad. The Crunch retaliated at the 14:46 mark by converting on the man-advantage. Brett Connolly passed to Jon DiSalvatore on the left side of the crease and DiSalvatore pushed the puck across to Cedric Paquette who scored on Heeter’s low glove-side. Paquette struck again a minute later with a slapshot from the left circle, assisted by Andre Sustr and J.P. Cote.
A minute into the final frame, Ben Holmstrom scored on the rebounded of a Steve Delisle slapshot from the right point. Dalton Smith evened the score at the 3:35 mark off a Marchessault pass across the crease to put the puck in low right side. Five minutes later, Yanni Gourde stole the puck in the Phantom attack zone, faked a shot from the right circle and passed it to Max Parent. Parent shot the puck top shelf to put the Crunch up 5-4. Luke Witkowski picked up his first of two helpers on the play. Marchessault capped the scoring at the 14:03 mark for a final margin of 6-4.
The Crunch host the Binghamton Senators tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
