PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz – The Arizona Sundogs paid a beautiful and heartwarming tribute to the fallen 19 firefighters, tonight during their opening ceremony at Tim’s Toyota Center in front of a crowd of 4,203 fans. The Sundogs fought for a comeback after Missouri posted two goals in the opening frame though they fell short in a 3-2 loss on home ice.
Missouri came out strong and posted the first goal, 9:30 into the first period with a shot from Trevor Kell. Less than six minutes later the Mavericks’ Andrew Courtney collected an unassisted goal. The opening frame was a physical period with 11 of the 19 penalty offenses being accessed. Dave Pszenyczny and Joe Tolles dropped their gloves and were each accessed a five minute major for fighting.
Arizona picked up two goals in the middle frame with a power play goal posted at 10:44 with an assist from Kevin Baker. Sebastian Geoffrion inched the Sundogs closer to tying the game with an unassisted goal with 3:30 remaining in the second period. With neither team able to find the back of the net in the third period John-Scott Dickson’s second period goal for Missouri, 1:55 into the period would prove to be the game winning goal with assists from Kyle Hood and Pszenyczny.
Goaltender Andrew Engelage took the loss for the Sundogs while blocking 22 shots. Arizona outshot Missouri 27-25 and Arizona was the only team to capitalize on the power play 1-5 and Missouri was 0-6 on the power play.
The Sundogs and Mavericks are back at it again tomorrow night at Tim’s Toyota Center when they go for round two in this two game set.
