BOISE, Idaho – Another playoff overtime victory for the Idaho Steelheads in game five of the ECHL Kelly Cup semifinals yields a three games to two edge in this best of seven series against the Ontario Reign.
Ontario got the scoring started at 4:33 of the first period on a goal mouth scramble as Kevin Estrada worked the puck past Idaho goalie Josh Robinson. On the other end of the ice, Reign net minder, Jean-Francois Berube, kept his net clean for the first 20 minutes.
With less than four minutes to play in the middle period Idaho’s Adrian Foster knocked in the rebound of a Matt Case shot from the point to even the score at one goal each. Josh Robinson stood tall in goal for the Steeleheads and did not allow an Ontario goal in the second stanza.
Period three saw a lot of back and forth action but no scoring as each team played a defensive game and waited to capitalize on the others mistake. Neither team blinked and tied 1-1 they proceeded to overtime.
Although Ontario had twelve shots on goal to Idaho’s four it was that fourth shot on the backhand for Chase Shaber after an acrobatic keep in at the blue line from Gord Baldwin that enabled Shaber to tally the game winner at 9:36 of the overtime period.
After the game Shaber described the game winning goal like this;
“Well, we got in on the fore check and Baldy (Baldwin) pinched in and fortunately he threw it up the middle and I just kind of blocked out and grabbed the puck and threw it low blocker,” said Schaber.
Leading the series 3 to 2 I daho heads to Southern California for at least one more game against the Reign.
Game 6 will be Tuesday, April 30 at Citizens Business Bank in Ontario, Ca. Game time is 7:00 p.m. PDT.
