SHEFFIELD, UK – Sheffield Steelers forward Tom Squires knows what it takes to realise his dream, and he did just that by lacing up his skates for the Sheffield Steelers, a team he’s supported since being a child.
The Sheffield-born 20-year-old was fortunate enough to have good coaches who helped guide him to his desired career and he hasn’t looked back since. Now the Steelers right-winger is hoping to pass on his skills to the next generation of youngsters hoping to don the teal and orange of the Sheffield Steelers.
The learn to play ice hockey sessions are led by Squires at the Doncaster Dome, in association with sports coaching organisation PTC Sports who run the Sheffield Steelers community program. The sessions are run in 6-week blocks, with there being three sessions a week, each lasting an hour. Children choose a session based on their ability, which is either beginner (Friday 4pm), intermediate (Thursday’s 8.30pm), or advanced (Wednesday’s 8.30pm).
The courses cover the fundamentals of ice hockey and include skating, passing, puck handling, shooting and game play, as well as some fun and enjoyable games.
Squires shared his thoughts on the scheme, “This program is running to not only improve the participants level but to help the future of British ice hockey, I was coached by senior players when I was learning to play and playing junior hockey and it brought my game on. Now hopefully I can give something back to the sport!”
The initiative is hoping to improve the communities’ attitude towards sport and in particular raise awareness about ice hockey and the Sheffield Steelers within the Doncaster region.
PTC Sports are helping to develop an awareness of the importance of sports and fitness to young people throughout the region. They have been in over a hundred schools within the area delivering their message on behalf of the Sheffield Steelers.
PTC Sports Project Manager Andy Cutler spoke about the importance of the initiative, “It’s great to be working in Doncaster and the community. The young people here are great, and we’ve had some really positive feedback so far. It’s great to help out the local community and to increase the awareness of the Steelers in Doncaster.”
