SHEFFIELD, U.K.- In what was a feisty, hard-hitting match, the Steeldogs triumphed 5-2 at the home of the Peterborough Phantoms on Sunday Sept. 30.
The Phantoms opened the scoring, however, with Tom Carlon scoring the first goal of the game on the PP at 9:21. The lead didn’t last long, as Greg Wood rushed down the ice after receiving a defence-splitting pass from Lee Haywood. The Steeldogs Captain coolly slotted the puck past Peterborough netminder, Damien King, to score a delayed penalty goal at 10:35.
Wood scored his second of the match, just 21 seconds before the break, to put the Steeldogs up 2-1 heading into the second period.
Early in the second period, the Steeldogs extended their lead with a 5-3 PP goal through Pavel Gomeniuk at 21:08. Ben Morgan made it 4-1 after 35:02, giving the Steeldogs, and the Steeldogs netminder, Dmitri Zimozdra, some breathing space.
The home pulled one back with four seconds left of the second period through James Ferrara. The second period ended 4-2 to the Steeldogs.
