SHEFFIELD, U.K.- Just days after their impressive 6-2 home win against the Telford Tigers, the Sheffield Steeldogs would have hoped to have taken the points in Swindon on Saturday Mar. 10. It wasn’t to be, however, with the Sheffield side suffering a 5-1 loss, making it three successive away losses for the Steeldogs.
The first period saw Swindon take the lead and control of the match. Goals from Aaron Nell and Jonas Hogg gave the Wildcats a 2-0 at the end of the first period.
Aaron Nell claimed his second of the night shorthanded, minutes into the second period to make it 3-0.
The Steeldogs made continuous brave efforts to bring the game back into contention by applying the pressure on the home side and piling up the goal scoring chances. However, the Steeldogs could not find a way past Wildcats netminder, Thomas Murdy, and the second period finished 3-0 to the home side.
With 10 minutes remaining in the third period, Swindon player/coach, Ryan Aldridge, increased the Wildcats lead to four.
Minutes later, Lee Richardson put the game beyond all doubt with another goal for the Wildcats.
With seconds left in the game, Sheffield’s Ashley Calvert produced some superb individual play to claim a consolation goal for the Steeldogs.
The game ended 5-1 to Swindon, marking Sheffield’s first defeat against the Wildcats this season. Steve Duncombe was awarded the MOTM for the Steeldogs.
Sheffield next play host to the Guildford Flames on Mar. 13 in the home leg of the EPL Cup Final.
