Steeldogs extinguish the Flames

SHEFFIELD, U.K.- The Sheffield Steeldogs recorded their first four point weekend of the new 2012/13 season on Sunday Oct. 7. after travelling to Guildford and beating the Flames 4-5 (after OT).
 
The Steeldogs opened the scoring in the first period, with Andrew Hirst claiming his second goal of the weekend after 15:11. Sheffield’s ex-Hull Stringrays defender, Derek Campbell made it 2-0 at 19:39, firing the puck past Flames’ and ex-Sheffield Scimitars netminder, Mark Lee.
 
Early in the second period at 27:31, Stuart Brittle slotted the puck past Lee to secure his first goal of the new season and give the Steeldogs a comfortable 3-0 lead.    
 
The last season’s League and Cup Champions were down, but not out. The Flames scored three in quick succession after a dominating spell of offensive possession.
 
Josef Kohut began the Guildford comeback, firing the puck past Steeldogs netminder, Dmitri Zimozdra, at 31:23. Less than a minute later, Rick Plant slotted the puck into the back of the Steeldogs’ net to make it 3-2. At 35:23, the Flames comeback was complete, as David Longstaff equalised to make it 3-3 heading into the final period.

Steeldogs Head Coach, Andre Payette, gave his side the lead again at 45:08; his third goal in two games. Curtis Huppe of the Guildford Flames evened the score once more, however, to take the two sides into OT.
 
Greg Wood, Steeldogs captain, was the hero for the Sheffield side, clinching a crucial OT goal at 3:48, his eighth of the campaign so far, to give his team an impressive 4-5 (OT) away victory.
 
The Sheffield Steeldogs will next travel to Swindon to face the Wildcats on Saturday Oct. 13.
