Sarno talks about Island life

ISLE OF WIGHT, UK – American Forward John Sarno joined the Wightlink Raiders of the English National League in the summer and in doing so made his first foray into British ice hockey. Sarno was due to join the Invicta Dynamos last summer, but didn’t for reasons listed in a previous article. Sarno took time out from his busy days of playing Fifa 10 on his PlayStation 2 with flat and team mates Danny Scout and James Udell to have a chat with PHN on life so far. “I’m loving it here. The people are great and the team is fantastic and there is a great atmosphere surrounding the boys in the locker room. We’ve just come off a bad weekend for the club what with losing to the team I was going to join and then not playing at all due to the kit van getting lost. It sucks that the league have said the game will go down as having been played and awarded to Haringey, but thems the breaks and we have to move on from it. It was a horror weekend for us and for me in particular as I wasn’t feeling 100% over the weekend. It wasn’t as horrific as some of the movies me and the boys enjoy watching though!” said horror film buff Sarno. Sarno was also very complimentary about his team mates and coach “Everyone here really respects Jeremy Cornish (Player/Head coach) both within the team and the community around the rink. He always tries to gee us up even when we’re goals behind and has played some great shifts and leads from the front on the ice”.

The league is notorious for being tough and hard-hitting and Sarno has noticed that “The ENL is a very solid league and has a lot of toughness to it. I understand it is growing quite rapidly and that can only be good for the teams in it. No-one is sure of a result in this league, as we found out on Sunday! (The EIHA awarded the cancelled game as a 5-0 home win to basement boys Haringey Greyhounds) Having said that, my own game is coming along well with 17 points in 7 games with only 16mins in the box. I feel I am contributing well to the team and hopefully I can be a part of a successful playoff side come the end of the season”. “My agent, David Imonti, and his associate Greg Blais recommended the Wightlink Raiders to me and I wasn’t sure at first as it was a big step to come to the UK. However I have no regrets at all and I am thoroughly enjoying my time here and thank them for getting me this roster spot” concluded Sarno. Contact the author pete.lewis@prohockeynews.com
