Royals end K-Wings eight-game winning streak Reading defeats Kalamazoo 4-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich – Winning their ninth game out of their last 11, the Reading Royals snapped the Kalamazoo Wings’ ECHL record eight-game winning streak with a 4-2 decision Friday night at Wings Stadium during Celebration! Cinema Night.

 Reading RoyalsThe victory gave the Royals sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

Reading jumped ahead quickly scoring 2:58 into the contest when Jesse Todd (2nd) deflected a Kevin Walrod slap shot straight into the air and over the shoulder of Joel Martin.

Trailing 1-0 to start the second period, it was the K-Wings turn to have an urgent response. Locating a loose puck to the right of former K-Wing Riley Gill, Matt Caria knocked in his 23rd goal of the season 1:34 into the period. The goal extended Caria’s overall point streak to seven games and his home point streak to an ECHL season-high 17 games.

Benefiting from a mad scramble in front of the K-Wings net five minutes later, Yannick Tifu (18th) outmuscled a slew of defenders to push the puck just over the goal line to put the Royals ahead 2-1.

Another quick response to start the third period for the K-Wings evened the game. Rifling a slap shot from the blue line, Dustin Cloutier’s (6th) slap shot hit off the cross bar and into the back of the net 2:10 into final period.

Todd gave Reading the lead for good midway in the period with his second of the night. The forward’s two-goal performance doubles his goal output for the season. Prior to Friday, Todd earned one goal in his first 34 games of the season.

Domenic Monardo put the game out of reach 27 seconds later notching his team-leading 25th goal of the season.
