Road Warriors go 1-1-1 in opening weekend

inaugural season off the right way with a 4-1 win over the Florida Everblades on Thursday, October 21. The Road Warrior’s Matt Schepke led the way with a pair of goals. The first goal coming at 19:23 of the first period off a pass from Chris Chappell, and the second at 16:32 in the third period, assisted by Marc-Olivier Vallerand and Connor Shields. This earned Schepke the top star honors for the game. The second star was handed to Greenville’s goaltender Nic Riopel who stopped 26 out of 27 shots fired at him. Julien Brouillette was given the third star honors, for notching Greenville’s go-ahead goal. Prior to his injury Florida’s Bobby Goepfert had a solid game going, stopping 33 out of 34 shots on goal.
 
The following night on October 22, both teams went at it again; however the outcome was a little bit different. Goals were the hot item for the game, with both teams combining for a total of 13 goals, with Florida winning the game in overtime with a score of 7-6. The Road Warriors saw a pair of goals scored by Matt Voakes, as well as goals scored by Brendan Connolly, Julien Brouillette, Andrew Carroll, and Marc-Olivier Vallerand.

Florida’s Alexandre Imbeault earned his first hat trick of the 2010-2011 season. Florida also saw Mike Kennedy, Mathieu Roy, Matthew Pistilli all score in regulation play. For Florida the game winning goal came at 4:30 in overtime, after defenseman Bobby Raymond got the puck past Greenville’s Nic Riopel on a centering pass from Matthew Pistilli, and earned Raymond top star honors for the game. The goal gave Florida the 7-6 overtime victory, while Greenville picked up a point and got the tie.
 
The Road Warriors then returned to the ice on Sunday, October 24 in the afternoon for tilt against their in-state rival the South Carolina Stingrays. Greenville once again got the goal scoring started with 2 goals from Andrew Carroll, the first coming at 8:58 in the opening period of play, and the second at the 3:27 mark of the second. For Greenville, that is where their scoring stopped, and South Carolina’s began. The Stingrays defenseman Josh Godfrey, who had 2 assists in the game, scored the Stingrays’ first goal at 7:26 in the second period. Later in the second, Maxime Lacroix was able to put the puck past Greenville’s Nic Riopel, after receiving a pass from Godfrey. Nikita Kashirsky gave South Carolina to 3-2 lead in the opening minutes of the third period, and Matt Scherer capped the game off and gave South Caolina the 4-2 win with an empty-net goal at 19:33 of the third period.
 
The Road Warriors look to avenge their loss with a pair of home games against the Stingrays on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, both games have a 7:05 start at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, SC.
