HIDALGO, Texas – The last professional hockey team to call South Texas home will cease operations, according to sources within the Central Hockey League. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, based in the border city of Hidalgo, Texas, played their home games at the State Farm Arena for nine seasons beginning in 2003. Despite a competitive on-ice product, the Killer Bees’ attendance faltered in recent years and the organization found itself unable to continue for a 10th season. The Killer Bees were a two-time Central Hockey League Franchise of the year (2003-04 and 2008-09). According to sources, an expansion hockey team in the North American Hockey League will play their games at the State Farm Arena this coming season, but the Killer Bees’ owners are not involved with the new franchise. Pro Hockey News will have more information on this breaking story as it unfolds. Contact the writer at robert.keith@prohockeynews.com
