ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign (1-0-0-0), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, saw their first-ever Season Home Opener shutout win with a 3-0 victory over the Bakersfield Condors (0-1-0-1) at Citizens Business Bank Arena on Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 8,953.
The Reign opened the game and the season with a strong start tallying two goals in the first period. The first goal came from Mario Lamoureux at 7:12. Brady Calla dropped a pass back to the Reign’s newest addition, Alex Roach, at the blue line who fired a shot on net. Condors goalie Paul Karpowich sent the rebound to Lamoureux who slammed it in.
At the 14:45 mark, Ontario was on the power-play for a delay of game penalty to Bakersfield. Rookie Matt White recorded his first professional goal with a beautiful backhand. Adrian Van de Mosselaer set up the play when he ripped a long shot from the blue line for Dan DaSilva to deflect it in. Karpowich knocked it aside but White was in front of the net, picked up the loose puck, and wrapped it around and in.
The Reign kept the Condors to just one shot on goal through the second period. Neither team able to find the back of the net and Ontario had 20 shots on goal through the first 40 minutes of play.
White lit the lamp for the second time of the night with another beautiful backhand past Karpowich. White picked up the puck from DaSilva at the inside hashes and with a quick shot sent it in to give Ontario a 3-0 lead at 8:04 of the third period.
Michael Hutchinson stopped all 15 shots faced for his ninth professional shutout win, Karpowich made 23 saves on 26 shots for the loss.
