Reign shook up by 6-1 loss to Aces Alaska evens season series with Wednesday win

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Ontario Reign suffered their largest loss of the season with a 6-1 defeat by the Alaska Aces at Sullivan Arena in Alaska on Wednesday night.

The game started with a power-play goal for the Aces. Nick Mazzolini brought the puck behind the Reign cage and sent a short pass to Andy Taranto just to the right of Jussi Olkinuora. Taranto’s short shot angled in past Olkinuora’s glove. Just 57 seconds later, at 3:22, a redirection off the stick of Zach Davies went five-hole to give the Aces a 2-0 lead.Aces Reign logo

Mazzolini faked a slap shot and passed the puck across the Reign zone to Peter Sivak who backhanded a top shelf shot to give the Aces a 3-0 lead 31 seconds into the second period. There was a two-on-one Aces charge at 4:49 which resulted in a quick shot by Turner Elson which was originally saved, but he netted the rebound to put Alaska ahead 4-0.

The Reign got on the board in the second period at the 11 minute mark. Matt Register received a beautiful feed from Tyler Gron in the high slot and snapped the puck past Gerald Coleman for Ontario’s first and only tally of the night.

In the third period, the Aces tacked on another goal from Tommy Mele just 1:53 in for a 5-1 score. Brett Findlay earned his third point of the night at 16:37 of the final frame for Alaska’s sixth goal of the night giving them a 6-1 lead.
