ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign lost a two-goal lead but made up for it with a second round shootout goal to beat the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 on Sunday evening before a home crowd of 7,504.
Cameron Burt celebrated his 27th birthday by scoring the first goal of the game as the Grizzlies attempted to clear the puck but it was intercepted by Maxim Kitsyn at the blue line. Kitsyn skated the puck up the seam and fired a shot on Aaron Dell; Burt caught the rebound and snapped it backdoor into the open cage at 7:56.
Gasper Kopitar extended his point streak to six games when he scored the Reign’s second goal with a slapshot from the right circle at 16:21. Steven Tarasuk earned the primary assist and Burt picked up his second point of the night with the secondary helper. As the Reign were down two skaters Utah set up a passing play around the Reign’s defense and with a quick wrister from the right circle hashes, Jamie MacQueen scored the Grizzlies’ first goal of the night with just four seconds remaining in the period.
About halfway through the third period, David Vallorani knocked the puck past Troy Redmann off a pass from Danick Paquette to tie the game 2-2. The score remained knotted through regulation and went to overtime.
The five-minute sudden-death overtime came and went leading way to a shootout. Kitsyn was the lone scorer and with a beautiful deke scored five-hole on Dell in the second round to win the game 3-2 in favor of Ontario.
Redmann earned the win with 17 saves, Dell took the loss with 26.
