Reign held off by Aces in 3-2 loss Season series ends; both teams earn four wins

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Ontario Reign dropped an early lead and couldn’t recover in time, ultimately falling 3-2 to the Alaska Aces on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.

To start things off, Cameron Burt made a tape-to-tape pass to Maxim Kitsyn who snapped a shot past Alex Kangas 1:12 into the second period. Matt Register started the play with a pass from the Reign zone. The goal came right after a missed opportunity for Brendan Connolly who rang a shot off the post. Connolly made up for it at 5:43 with a quick power-play goal.Aces Reign logo

Kitsyn made another great play resulting in a goal for his second point of the night. The forward stickhandled the puck in close to the crease and sent a last minute pass across the front of the crease to Adrian Van De Mosselaer who knocked it in to re-establish the lead for Ontario. Sebastian Stalberg add the secondary assist at 14:25.

Just 35 seconds into the final frame Andy Taranto wristed a shot high, past the glove of Jussi Olkinuora to tie the game 2-2. While shorthanded, Nick Mazzonlini powered by the Reign defense and from the blue line went two-on-one with Jordan Morrison. Mazzolini faked a shot sending Burt into a diving block, but passed the puck to Morrison who was wide open and slammed it backdoor for what would be the game-winner in a 3-2 win for Alaska.

Olkinuora made some tremendous saves but took the loss with 31 saves; Kangas earned the win stopping 28 shots.

Three Stars:

1. AK – Alex Kangas

2. AK – Nick Mazzolini

3. AK – Andy Taranto
