BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Ontario Reign lost 6-4 to the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday night at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Chris Collins opened the scoring to put the Condors ahead 1-0 at the 6:44 mark of the first period. Everett Sheen evened the score with a quick, unassisted shot that sneaked past Laurent Brossoit at 8:09.
Matt White didn’t waste any time to give the Reign a 2-1 lead just 47 seconds into the second period. The rookie forward picked up a pass from Sebastian Stalberg in a two-on-one situation, powered into the Condors end, and snapped a shot up high past Brossoit. Ontario didn’t hold the lead for long, as Collin Bowman scored to tie the game at 4:28 with a deflected shot that found its way in. Ontario fell behind 2-3 when Chase Schaber scored a power-play goal at 6:26.
Bakersfield tacked on their fourth tally of the night with 8:03 left in the second period. Nicholas Trembley hacked at the puck in the Reign’s crease and stuffed the biscuit under the pads of Jussi Olkinuora.
Ontario was put into a three-goal deficit just 39 seconds into the final frame as Gary Steffes and two other Condors charged the Reign net to create traffic. The puck got through but didn’t cross the goal line until Steffes backhanded it into the net for the Condors’ fifth goal of the game. White came flying through the neutral zone on a short-handed breakaway and with a nice deke, beat Brossoit five-hole to bring the Reign within two.
With just under two minutes left in regulation, the Condors scored on an empty Reign net. Moments later, Jake Newton snapped a quick shot past Brossoit’s glove side to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of Bakersfield. The scoring would end there giving the Reign their third straight loss, the most seen by the team this season.
Olkinuora took the loss with 28 saves; Brossoit earned the win stopping 15 shots.
