Reign can’t complete rally and lose 3-2 to Eagles Physical play steady throughout close contest

LOVELAND, Colo – The Ontario Reign couldn’t build on the momentum of a last-minute goal and fell to the Colorado Eagles 3-2 at Budweiser Events Center on Friday night.

The Eagles scored first, but not until the 7:24 mark of the second period when Kevin Ulanski beat Jussi Olkinuora with a quick shot set up by Greg Gardner and Riley Nelson. About two and half minutes later, Kyle Kraemer broke through and split the Reign defense to go on a mini breakaway. He backhanded the puck up and over the glove of Olkinuora at 9:57.Image3

Kraemer got on the scoresheet for the second time of the night when he scored off a rebound. Olkinuora made two big saves before Kraemer snuck the puck past the Reign goaltender. Matt White was in the right spot in front of the Eagles net to receive a beautiful pass from Gasper Kopitar who was under pressure. White redirected the puck past Marc Cheverie to bring the Eagles lead to 3-1. Reign Captain Derek Couture also assisted the play.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Maxim Kitsyn found a gap in the Eagles net and scored from an impossible angle at the goal line. The rookie had help setting up the power-play goal from Cody Sol and Matt Register. Unfortunately for Ontario, the last-minute goal wasn’t enough to push them past the Eagles and Colorado took game two of this road series, 3-2.

Olkinuora had 27 saves in the loss; Cheverie made 28 earning the victory.
