DETROIT, Mich – The Anaheim Ducks were looking to push the Red Wings to the brink of elimination after winning game three and taking a two games to one series lead.
The Wings had other plans as they wanted to even things up on the historic Joe Louis Arena ice.
Detroit was with out Justin Abdelkader who was given a two game suspension for his hit on Ducks defence man Toni Lydman who was also out of the line up as well.
Anaheim got things going as Andrew Cogliano made a nice feed to Matt Beleskey who notched his 2nd of the playoffs to give the Ducks an early lead.
Ducks played a great road period as they kept pucks deep in the Red Wings end and used the forecheck to pressure the Red Wings and keep them on their toes.
Jonas Hiller was sharp in the Ducks net as he stopped 13 shots and the Ducks led 1-0 after one period.
Detroit kept the pressure on Anaheim in the second as Hiller had to come up big numerous times and robbed Ben Eaves twice with great saves.
Emerson Etem had the best chance for the Ducks as he beat Jimmy Howard but couldn’t beat the post as his shot rang loud off the iron.
Detroit outshot the Ducks 14-7 in the second but trailed 1-0.
Brendan Smith got his 1st of the post season as he converted a Dan Cleary pass to tie things at 1-1 and give the home fans something to scream about.
Etem who was dangerous all game gave the Ducks the lead after a mad scramble in front of Howard he was credited with the goal 2-1 Ducks.
After the Ducks took the lead Pavel Datsyuk took over the game as he controlled the play and the puck every time he came on the ice.
Datsyuk tied the game at 2-2 when he made some slick moves with his magical hands and beat Hiller.
This game would need over time for the second time in the series we were getting bonus hockey.
Damien Brunner got the winner after he followed up a Gustav Nyquist break away and flipped a loose puck past Hiller for the winner at 15:10 of the extra frame.
Hiller was outstanding for the Ducks as he stopped 46 shots in the loss.
Howard wasn’t as busy but he made 30 saves for the win.
This series was even at two games apiece and now has turned into a best of three with the teams heading back to California for game five.
