ROMFORD, UK – Romford Raiders have announced Erskine Douglas as their coach for the rest of the season.
This is Douglas’ fourth spell in charge of the Raiders. He has previously coached the side in the 91/92, 00/01 and 03/04 seasons. He also played for Romford in the club’s first two seasons, and had the honour of scoring the club’s very first goal.
A Romford spokesman said: “Erskine had originally agreed to act as caretaker coach while we sifted through the applications and looked for a permanent appointment. We had interest from North America, mainland Europe and several from the UK but in the end we realised we might be looking a gift horse in the mouth.
“Erskine’s credentials as one of the best qualified coaches in the UK are well established – he is Head of Coaching for the EIHA – as is his relationship with Romford. Better still, he knows us, knows this place and knows the team, and he’s had success here before.”
The coaching change had to be made following the announcement of Jesse Hammill’s imminent departure from the club to return home to Canada.
The additions to the Raiders do not stop at Douglas. Former Romford defenceman Tyrone Miller has rejoined the club to strengthen the blueline. The 27 year-old has played a part in each of the Raider’s last 10 seasons, despite short spells with other clubs. The British D man plays a gritty game and is good in the transition. His presence will be a big boost for the Raiders, as they have been playing with just four defenceman in recent games.
The Raiders spokesman said of Miller’s return: “We’ve always kept in touch with Tyrone and were talking to him about a return to Romford some weeks back. Our conversations still needed a few wrinkles to be ironed out when, unfortunately for us, Basingstoke made Ty a very good offer and we could easily understand why he accepted.
“A few things have changed now and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to reach agreement with Ty and with Basingstoke. I have to say that the Bison organisation, and Steve Moria in particular, have been a tremendous help in finalising this arrangement and their professional attitude is an example to all.
“It seems incredible that this will be Tyrone’s 10th year in the Gold and Blue but that’s the reality. It’s no secret that he sees Rom Valley Way as home and he will be a definite asset on our blueline.”
It is hoped that Miller will be available to ice this weekend against Peterborough Phantoms and Basingstoke Bison, alongside Romford’s new import, Darius Pliskauskas, who signed on earlier in the week.
The Romford spokesman concluded: “We still have one clear ambition – making the play-offs. It’s difficult but not impossible and we hope that these changes, the additions of Darius and Tyrone and maybe some more to come will move us closer to our goal. The rest of the season starts now!”
