Rage win may be season turning point

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – A decisive 6-3 win over the New Mexico Scorpions not only gives the Rage a positive start to the new year, but it just may be the start of the turn around to a disappointing season. The win over New Mexico brings the Rage season record to 14-14-2, and leaves them in second place in the Northwest Division, three points ahead of the Rapid City Rush. It has been a disappointing start for Rage fans, who anticipated a far better season this year.  The Rage finished last season with a record of 36-22-6, finishing just 3 points behind the division rival Colorado Eagles, and narrowly missing the playoffs. With the core of last season’s team returning, Rage fans expected a continuation of last seasons performance, but saw a team that was finding it difficult to win, and showing obvious signs of frustration and, at times, complete lack of effort. As the season wears on, the Rage are beginning to show signs of emerging from the fog that has covered the team to fight their way back to the powerful offensive team they were in the previous season. While they still struggle at times both offensively and defensively, they are starting to put together full game efforts, play consistently and not give in to frustration. The win over New Mexico puts the Rage at .500, and gives them momentum at a time that will surely be to their advantage. The new year starts with the Rage playing at home for 12 of their next 13 games. If the Rage can turn home ice to their advantage, they could use this favorable home stand to put some distance between themselves and Rapid City, and improve on their point standing as the second half of the season begins. But it will take some work for the Rage as home ice has not been a dominate factor for them this season, posting a home record of just 7-6-1. But if they can continue to put together full games like they have been doing for the past few games, this home stand could prove decisive for their season. Tonight’s win over the New Mexico Scorpions was a complete team effort. Five players scored, Scott Reid finished with 35 saves, and the special teams came to life scoring three power play goals and a short handed goal. The Rage outshot the Scorpions 47-38 and played one of their best games this season. It comes at what just may be the turning point in the Rage’s season.
