Quebec wins in shootout against Shawinigan

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Totally dominated in the third period by the Cataractes in shots on goal the Remparts found a way to win 5-4 with Mikhail Grigorenko beating the Shawinigan goaltender in the shootout.

On Saturday Quebec saw Shawinigan coming back twice after leading by two goals during the game, but Patrick Roy’s team found another way to win this time needing the shootout.

“We were very good for two periods,” Roy said to begin his post game press conference. “But we will have to play much better in the third period because we gave up around 38 shots against in our last two third periods in our last two games. It’s sure we aren’t happy about that.”

“I have to admit the line of Michael Chaput with Anton Zlobin and Kirill Kabanov dominate the third period, we loses every one-on-one battle along the board they were very solid on the puck even if they were playing their third games in as many nights, and with nine players (seven regular) out of their lineup due to injuries.”

Quebec began the game trying to dictate the tempo scoring first two goals in 1:21. Michael McNamee surprising Shawinigan goaltender Alex Dubeau five hole at 7:09 of the opening period.

After scoring their first two goals in 1:21, in the opening period Quebec came back in second period regaining their two goals lead 4-2 this time in span of 4:52. Mikhail Grigorenko completed a great play getting a perfect pass from left winger Roy. Grigorenko wrist shot beat Cataractes goalie high on Dubeau stick side at 8:02. Leading by two for second times in the game Quebec saw their opponent coming back again reducing Quebec lead to one goal 4-3 at 15:30. Coming out from behind the net Anton Zlobin finds a tiny hole between Domingue’s right pads and the post just enough to see the puck went behind Quebec netminder.

Leading by one Quebec came back in the third period wanting to score what is usually the back breaking goal, but instead they saw their opponent giving all they got to dominate the third period to finally scoring the unique goal of the period. Zlobin with his second of the night pushed both teams in overtime scoring Shawinigan fourth goal at 15:41.

With only 1:50 gone in the overtime Kabanov put his team in dangerous situation forcing his teammates to kill a penalty for goalie interference. Fortunately for Shawinigan they successfully killed the penalty forcing the shootout.

Unfortunately for the Cataractes Domingue who plays very strong third period stopped all Cataractes shooters being lucky on the first one when Zlobin saw his shot hit the post.

Dubeau make the save on Alexandre Contois and Frederick Roy before seeing Grigorenko putting the puck behind Shawinigan netminder for Quebec victory.

For one Shawinigan head coach Eric Veilleux praised his team effort after seeing his players giving all they got even if they were playing a third games in as many nights.

“I’m very satisfied of the team effort, even if we missed nine players tonight. I’m very proud of all players, honestly we should have earned a better outcome to this game. I don’t know how they (Remparts) played it wasn’t my task to judge but from what I saw on the ice tonight we should earned two points. We didn’t steal anything.”
