Quebec wins game two 5-1 leaving for Shawinigan leading the series 2-0

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Even if Shawinigan gave much better effort than the night before, Quebec  still came out winning game two with five different scorers. Like in the first game, special units, contribute to Remparts victory with one goal with a man advantage and another in shorthanded situation. Quebec ended with one goal in three opportunities, Shawinigan ends up with one goal in five power play chances.

If the Cataractes head coach Eric Veilleux wasn’t happy about his team overall performance after the first game, in second game, his team got scoring chances but Quebec goaltender made the difference.

“The difference tonight was their goaltender, Domingue made key saves, saves I’m not sure he knew that he made, but it’s what made the difference.”

Coming back to first game performance Shawinigan head coach agreed to say, his team came out better in second game than last night but in same time he said, “I don’t have anything to hide to anyone, I just said to my players, when you see two of your 16 years old Justin Hache and Matthew Bersey on the ice more than the majority of others, it wasn’t normal. Bersey just came in, Hache played only half of our games this season.”

Talking about the efficiency of Quebec power play, Veilleux recognized Remparts got good power play but…. “They have good power play, it’s important to be alert, but we weren’t. We have had our occasions but it didn’t work over the weekend.”

“I don’t check who scores goals on the other side all the time, but Audy-Marchessault (John) got some points tonight. It’s important that our best players put points on board too, to get chances to win.” Cataractes bench boss said referring to best players on both sides.

Shawinigan had the advantage in shots on goal department in first twenty minutes but came out trailing 2-1 after the opening period.

Quebec scored first two goals in the game, first one at even strength, the other in shorthanded situation, playing four against five. Ryan Bourque beat Shawinigan goaltender Gabriel Girard with a one-timer following great pass from Frederick Roy at 12:32 of the opening period. Quebec got perfect record breaking the ice six times in as many occasions since the series began.

Talking about team mission the author of Quebec first goal said, “Our team goal was to come out and play good games, for the first two games in that series, and we did it. We have a great crowd here and every time we have to play here, it’s a great advantage for us. We have been fortunate to win first two games here playing two solid games, we just have to carry that momentum to Shawinigan.”

Bourque admitted the team play better in first game but the important thing for him is to be able to keep their consistency for game three and four in Shawinigan.

“I think we had a really good game yesterday, we came out flying, and the most important thing for us, is to be able to keep that consistency. As a team, we did it tonight, obviously, it wasn’t easy tonight, we got lots of penalties and we had to kill lots of it, it’s tough on the team because it gave momentum to the other team. We did great job facing that adversity and it gave us the victory.”

With Remparts captain Mikael Tam in the box for interference, veteran defenseman Alex Wall wins his race for the puck and beat Shawinigan goaltender with a backhanded shot for Quebec second goal at 16:00.

With Tam still in the box, Shawinigan center David Labrecque get his team on board with first and only Cataractes goal in the game 56 second after Quebec scored in shorthanded situation.

With 10 seconds remaining to the first period referee send Shawinigan center Labrecque and Quebec defenseman Tam in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Quebec came back in second period scoring only once on 13 shots on Cataractes netminders. Girard, who wasn’t at his best, the night before, made several good saves in the middle frame, trying to keep his teammates in the game.

Vincent Barnard’s shot from left face off circle left no chance to Shawinigan goaltender giving Quebec a third goals in the game at 13:36. John Aydy-Marchessault, who ended first game of that series with two assists, score Quebec fourth goal in the game, his first against Shawinigan, with his team being in a power play situation at 4:36 of third period.

Joe Dube for whom it was his first goal of the current playoff scored Quebec last goal in that game at 12:57.

Quebec goaltender Louis Domingue played very well in first two games of Quarter-Final series against Shawinigan. After making 26 saves on 27 shots on Friday night, he gave another solid performance in second game with 38 saves on Cataractes 39 shots.

With Shawinigan giving a better opposition in second game, Quebec head coach Patrick Roy was happy about his overall tem performance.

“Yes, I’m happy about the team performance, if I would have thing to say, I would like to see us being in better control of our emotions. We took some penalties that we aren’t use to see from our team, but besides that, I must say in a key situations (three against four, four against five), we did a great job overall.”

About the number of shots against his goaltender, Roy didn’t seem to be bothered. “No, it didn’t bother me, we talked about it before the series. Shawinigan is a team that put the puck in front of the net, and they didn’t do fancy play. It gave a chance to Louis (Domingue) to stay focus in the game. That’s how we like him, and that’s the way we want him to play.”

Game three and four will be play in Bionest Center in Shawinigan on next Tuesday April 12, and Wednesday April 13. If game five is necessary it will be play in Quebec on Friday April 15.
