QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Playing their best hockey of the series wasn’t enough for the Val-d’Or Foreurs as they were swept in four games by the Quebec Remparts. Scoring 12 goals in 23 power play opportunities since the series began, Quebec added two more in three attempts in the series clinching win. The Remparts won 5-2 in front of 1,238 Val-d’Or fans, seeing their favorites, for one last time in 2010-11.
Like the night before Quebec opened the scoring first. Following a minor on each side, to Quebec right winger Brandon Duke and Val-d’Or defenseman Olivier Dallaire, both teams played four-on-four.
A great play by John Audy-Marchessault who made a great pass to Vincent Barnard, the Quebec defenseman found Joel Champagne left alone in the slot. Champagne’s shot left no chance to young Foreurs netminder Francois Tremblay for Quebec’s first goal at 5:33.
Val-d’Or tied the game less than four minutes later, when Olivier Archambeault took the rebound, following Brett Hester first shot, at 9:24.
But a penalty to Val-d’Or team for too many men on the ice, served by Adam Jones, opened the door to one of the best power play units in the 2010-11 playoff series.
Ryan Bourque wrist shot hit the post before going behind the Foreurs netminder at 12:06.
Quebec ended first period leading 2-1 and hit for 33 percent on their power play, scoring one of their two first period goals, on three power play chances.
After the Val-d’Or goaltender made several key saves at the beginning of second period, Quebec took a two-goal lead following another costly penalty taken by Foreurs defenseman Guillaume Gelinas for kneeing at 8:04.
Frederick Roy (who was the victim of Gelinas kneeing attempts) found a way to make them pay, redirecting a Bourque pass and beating Tremblay for Quebec’s third goal at 8:16 of second period.
Tomas Filippi beat Foreurs goaltender with a one-timer high in the slot, giving no chances to Tremblay, who saw the puck go between his pads with 5:39 remaining.
Alexandre Carrier scored what became Val-d’Or last goal in 2010-11 playoffs pushing the puck behind Quebec goaltender Louis Domingue with 5:11 remaining in the game.
Already earning three assists in the game, Audy-Marchessault completed Quebec offensive with the Remparts’ fifth goal beating Tremblay with a backhanded shot at 16:18.
Quebec will have to wait until next Friday April 8, before knowing their next opponent for their quarterfinal series.
