QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — The trading deadline is the last occasion QMJHL general managers have to add the last piece of the puzzle they think that could give them a chance to take part in the big dance. For some the decision they took at the trading deadline were good ones for others it’s a long process to rebuild their team.
Lots of rumors swirled around the QMJHL corridors on Saturday morning couple hours before 12:00 pm, several became realities, others still only as rumors.
A total of 15 trades were confirmed Saturday before 12:00 pm. Six others were announced for January 4th through 6th.
Beside the trade between Shawinigan and Rimouski that saw Dale Deon (1992-12-03) going from the Cataractes to the Oceanic for the 7th round pick formerly belonging to Shawinigan, another trade had been confirmed on the 4th . Saint John sent Tyrone Sock (1993-01-19) to Prince Edward Island for Jordan Moore (1992-05-21).
Four trades were announced on January 5th, the first one saw veteran defenseman Michael Beauregard plus a third (previously belonging to Blainville-Boisbriand) and fourth (previously belonging to Cape Breton) round pick in 2012, and first and second round selection in 2013 from Chicoutimi to Gatineau. In return the Olympiques sent to the Sagueneens veteran defenseman Mathieu Gagnon (1992-11-02) and right winger Christian Ouellet (1991-08-28).
The second one on the 5th saw Cape Breton left winger William Cochrane (1993-09-19) to Acadie-Bathurst, in return the Titan sent a sixth round pick in 2013.
The third trade saw Drummondville right defenseman Brayden Wood (1994-06-28) going to Moncton, the Wildcats sent a sixth round selection in 2013.
Quebec made the last move on the 5th acquiring Halifax left winger Gabriel Desjardins and two second round picks in 2012 (second one previously belonging to Quebec). Quebec sent to Halifax defenseman Brandon Duke and a first round selection in 2012.
Quebec made another move on the only trade confirmed by the QMJHL on January 6th. Rouyn-Noranda sent defenseman Simon Desmarais (1994-03-22) to Quebec for Remparts second round pick in 2012.
Seeing the deadline hours approaching cell phone line of lots of G.M. sound occupied trying to make the trade that could make a difference, at least, in the next playoff, trying to get a chance to be the QMJHL team that will represent the league, at the next Memorial Cup tournament at Shawinigan this year.
Quebec and Drummondville were the first two teams that opened the day on January 7th confirming a trade seeing goaltender Alexandre Veroneau be traded to Drummondville for a sixth round pick previously belonging to Saint John.
Rimouski and Drummondville trades players and draft picks. The Oceanic sent two left wingers Alex Emond (1991-09-16) and Guillaume Gauthier (1995-09-12) and a fifth round pick to Drummondville, the Voltigeurs sent defenseman Jean-Philippe Mathieu (1991-03-31) and a third round selection in 2013 to Rimouski.
Quebec sent defenseman Mathieu Boily (1995-05-21) and a seventh round pick in 2013 to Gatineau for the Olympiques fourth round selection in 2012.
Victoriaville sent defenseman Nick Egan (1993-02-09) to Acadie-Bathurst the Titan sent a twelve round pick in 2012 to the Tigres.
Chicoutimi sent defenseman Andre Napessis (192-11-24) to Drummondville in return of Voltigeurs eighth round pick in 2012.
Baie-Comeau sent center Andrew Meredith (1994-05-16) to Victoriaville, in return of Voltigeurs sixth round selection in 2013.
Cape Breton sent right winger David Rose (1991-08-14) to Baie-Comeau. The Drakkar sent their third round pick in 2013 to the Screaming Eagles.
Baie-Comeau sent veteran goaltender Antonio Mastropietro (1991-07-31) to Rouyn-Noranda for the Huskies fifth round pick in 2013.
Rouyn-Noranda sent the right to American player Austin Cangelosi (1994-08-27) presently playing in the USHL and center Robbie DeFulviis (1992-02-05) to Quebec. In return the Remparts sent their sixth and ninth round picks in 2013.
Chicoutimi sent left winger Stephane Matteau (1994-02-23) and a third round selection in 2013 to Blainville-Boisbriand. In return the Armada sent a third round pick in 2012 (previously belonging to Victoriaville), a first round pick in 2013 and a fourth round pick in 2014.
Quebec sent right winger Raphael Corriveau (1994-05-12) and defenseman Simon Desmarais (1994-03-22) to Cape Breton to Screaming Eagles left winger Logan Shaw (1992-10-05).
Quebec sent center Robbie DeFulviis (1992-02-05) and a sixth round pick (previously belonging to Saint John) to Rimouski. In return the Oceanic sent defenseman Maxime Fortier (1994-06-11).
Blainville-Boisbriand sent left winger Michael Clarke to Cape Breton, in return the Sceaming Eagles sent fourth round pick in 2012 (previously belonging to Shawinigan and sixth round selection in 2013 (previously belonging to Blainville-Boisbriand).
Shawinigan made possibly the biggest trade acquiring defenseman Brandon Gormley (1992-02-18) sending in return the right to Michael Matheson(1994-02-27), two fifth round pick in 2012, first European pick in 2013, third and fifth round pick 2013 and a second round pick in 2014.
The last trade saw Chicoutimi goaltender Alexandre Michaud (1995-10-20) and first round pick in 2014 (previously belonging to Blainville-Boisbriand), another first round pick in 2014 and a second round pick also in 2014 be sent to Gatineau for Jean-Gabriel Pageau (1992-11-11).
